Devotion: Choosing the Right Path

Theme Verse: Proverbs 12:26 (NIV)
"The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray."

Icebreaker Questions:

  1. If you could only bring three people with you on a road trip, who would you choose and why?

  2. Have you ever followed someone's advice and later regretted it? What happened?

1. What Does It Mean to Be Righteous?

  • Definition: Righteousness means living in a way that honors God, following His commands, and making wise choices.

  • Supporting Verse: Psalm 1:6 – "For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction."

2. What Does It Mean by Wicked?

  • Definition: Wickedness refers to those who reject God’s ways and make choices that lead away from truth.

  • Supporting Verse: Proverbs 4:14-15 – "Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way."

3. What Is Astray?

  • Definition: To go astray means to wander from God’s truth, often due to poor influences or wrong choices.

  • Supporting Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:33 – "Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’"

Discussion Questions & Bible Verses

  1. How can we tell if someone is a good influence in our life?

    • Verse: Matthew 7:16 – "By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?"

  2. Why do you think God warns us about following the wrong crowd?

    • Verse: Proverbs 13:20 – "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm."

  3. What are some ways we can surround ourselves with godly influences?

    • Verse: Hebrews 10:24-25 – "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

  4. What should we do if we realize we are being led astray?

    • Verse: James 4:7-8 – "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you."

  5. How can we be a godly influence on others?

    • Verse: Titus 2:7-8 – "In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness, and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned."

Closing Challenge:

Encourage students to evaluate their friendships this week. Are their friends helping them grow in their faith or pulling them away? Challenge them to be intentional about choosing godly friends and being a Christ-like influence on others.
